چکیده

(left panel) and rendered images (right panel) showing results of the ALFF analysis. Upper: compared with normal controls, patients at baseline showed significantly decreased (blue) ALFF only in bilateral ventral medial frontal cortex (P < 0.05 corrected). Middle: compared with baseline, patients after six weeks showed significantly increased (red) ALFF mainly in bilateral prefrontal and parietal lobes (P < 0.05 corrected). Lower: compared with controls, patients after six weeks showed significantly increased (red) ALFF in right caudate and left putamen (P < 0.05 corrected). Short-term effects of antipsychotic treatment on cerebral function in drug-naive first-episode schizophrenia revealed by "resting state" functional magnetic resonance imaging.

CONTEXT Most of what we know about antipsychotic drug effects is at the receptor level, distal from the neural system effects that mediate their clinical efficacy. Studying cerebral function in antipsychotic-naive patients with schizophrenia before and after pharmacotherapy can enhance understanding of the therapeutic mechanisms of these clinically effective treatments. OBJECTIVE To examine a...

Lateral and medial hypofrontality in first-episode schizophrenia: functional activity in a medication-naive state and effects of short-term atypical antipsychotic treatment.

OBJECTIVE The dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate cortex are critical components of the brain circuitry underlying executive control. The objective of this study was to investigate control-related dorsolateral prefrontal cortex functioning and conflict-related anterior cingulate cortex functioning in a group of never medicated first-episode schizophrenia patients to determ...

Hippocampal and caudate volume reductions in antipsychotic-naive first-episode schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND Enlarged ventricles and reduced hippocampal volume are consistently found in patients with first-episode schizophrenia. Studies investigating brain structure in antipsychotic-naive patients have generally focused on the striatum. In this study, we examined whether ventricular enlargement and hippocampal and caudate volume reductions are morphological traits of antipsychotic-naive fir...

Effects of low-dose risperidone and low-dose zuclopenthixol on cognitive functions in first-episode drug-naive schizophrenic patients.

BACKGROUND Studies on the effects of antipsychotics on cognitive deficits in schizophrenia mostly suggest a superior effect of atypical over typical compounds, although findings are inconsistent and effect sizes small. Several methodological issues, such as heterogeneous patient samples, incomparable drug doses, effects of prior medication, construct validity, and retest effects on neuropsychol...
